A 10k gold fill, manual wind, Longines dress watch. This is a very handsome and classic watch. This gentleman’s 1959 vintage Longines watch is an ideal piece for someone looking for a dressy and elegant vintage model. The watch is both collectible and wearable at the same time. The quality of Longines watches from this time holds its own against almost all other brands at the time, and its movement the equal of anything that was produced by most of the prestigious Swiss houses from the same era.
The design of this model is clean, making it easy to wear. There is a fine bezel which gives the illusion of the case being an even more impactful size. The narrow, straight, drop lugs come off the case and give the watch a nice compact feel on the wrist, sitting centrally and not over hanging.
The dial on the watch is quite simple but beautiful in this high gloss black finish, and likely to appeal to most. There is no minute track, just the clean and fine baton hour markers. Below the 12 o’clock marker is the famous applied winged logo. The overall proportions of the dial are great, and being a larger size there is also a quite large subsidiary seconds dial above the 6 o'clock marker sitting beneath the rotating fine gold pencil hands. This is always a handsome additional complication on a time only watch, and in this case with its concentric engraving and gilt cross hair design, even more so than most. The dial is printed “Swiss” at the foot of the dial
Inside the snap-on case back are various stampings; there are the maker's mark SW, the branding of Longines, in the eagle logo form and name, along with the model number. The movement in this watch is Longines calibre 23z. A hand wound caliber that made that features sub seconds functionality and is designed with bridges that are not beveled in Europe but were beveled in the US . The movement uses a flat hairspring in Europe and a Breguet hairspring in the US.. Additionally, the European version incorporates a gold lever and Super-Shock-Resist technology, while the US version has a ratchet wheel mounted with a washer. The movement is in Excellent original condition, and keeping good time.
Overall, the watch is in excellent unpolished all original condition. This is a great, very wearable and versatile watch. It would look no less out of place under a dress shirt as it would with a pair of jeans and t-shirt. The glossy black dial will be sure to draw attention!
